This week we studied all about apples! We read a book about the different parts of apples, learned the parts of the apple, and learned the labeling lesson. The next day we read the book Ten Red Apples and retold the story through objects in a sequencing lesson. Today, we learned about different types of apples.  We got to taste red delicious, granny smith, and golden delicious apples. We made a class tally chart to determine which type of apple our class liked best. Granny Smith apples got the most votes! :) We also cut an apple in half, found the star in the middle, and made apple prints. We had apple muffins and apples for snack. We also learned an apple fraction lesson in the afternoon class.

Today, a friend gave our class an Amaryllis bulb.  We had a lot of fun things to learn and do! The soil came in a disc. We measured 3 1/2 cups of water and poured it in the pot with the disc. We watched the soil "absorb" the water and "expand". We learned the parts of a bulb. We found as many parts as we could see. (roots) (tunic-scaly outside covering) (scale leaves- the ringed part of an onion that stores all the food for the plant inside) We dug a hole and planted the bulb. We made predictions how long we thought it would take to see a flower. ?

At the first of the school year, one of our friends brought in very small tadpoles. We fed the tadpoles and watched them grow into froglets with a small tail and two back legs. Then, our froglets turned into frogs! We have released two frogs into their natural habitat near our school.

In our afternoon work time, we learned about Jackson Pollock. We read Action Jackson by Jan Greenberg and Sarndra Jordan. We learned how Pollock painted on a big canvas on the floor and used his whole body to drip and splatter the lines of his art. We made action paintings by rolling a marble in paint to create lines and drips on our paper, too.

Today, we continued our study of the Earth, Sun, and moon.  We learned that the Earth goes around the sun one time every day and that's what makes a day.  We also learned that the moon goes around the Earth once a month, and the Earth goes around the sun once a year.  The children all took turns pretending to be the Earth, moon, and sun, and acting out time.

Today, we talked about the Earth.  We learned the new vocabulary word rotate.  We discussed how the Earth rotates or turns on its axis.  We used a lamp to represent the sun and talked about how we have day when the Earth is facing toward the sun and night when the sun is facing away from the sun.  The orange dot represents where we live on the globe. We also discussed the word revolve, to move around.  We made the globe revolve around the sun and talked about the ellipse shape in which it revolves. (It's the same shape as our line time rug.)
